The main thing I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Skylar & Plux. It was fun, kind of cheesy, nicely designed and I hope not the last time we see these characters. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is homage to early 3d platformers. You control your feline hero and help her gather three relic parts to restore something that brings her memory back. If you have ever played Ratchet & Clank or Jak & Daxter you will be right at home.
Skylar & Plux seems to take its fighting inspirations from Jak & Daxter, & its platforming from Ratchet & Clank. Movement around the environment was fun and smooth. I did have to fight the camera in some instances when looking over ledges, but nothing too detrimental to the enjoyment of the game. Collectibles were fun to collect (I couldn’t stop looking for them once I heard the crying).
The game has a solid world design with some really nice-looking zones and nicely hidden areas. Fun puzzles, they were nice to have and moved the levels along however they were a bit too easy at times. Tools given to you in each zone were fun to use especially the time tools. Only having one boss was a same as it was well designed & having a good designed boss for each “world” would have been great. Enemy types weren’t varied that much & a lot of the time the world seemed empty of enemies.
The story started off strong with CRT a fun goofy bad guy. Voice acting was in my opinion really good all round, but I was slightly confused why the elder had a very youthful voice, but the actress still did a good job. My biggest confusion was why all the other characters are voiced but not Skylar? (I know protagonists of old were silent like Jak, but I feel she was the least interesting character.) I was disappointed that the story was so short I would have loved for this game to last at least a few more hours (hopefully a sequel can be longer).
Game World and Graphics are top-notch: seriously, the character models / animations / level design is something you would expect from the AAA game. Beautiful Sounds and Music: the Music fits the colorful game mood and enhances it.
For the price I absolutely recommend Skylar & Plux as it is a solid 3-D platformer that you can enjoy in an afternoon and will leave you wishing for more. The replay-ability to go back and find all the imprisoned creatures is something I will definitely be doing. Skylar & Plux can be found on PS4, Xbox One, & Steam for $9.74.
