Overview

The new Ratchet & Clank on PS4 is technically billed as a re-imagining of the original, a modern update to a nearly 15-year-old game. But after playing through the game nearly twice, it’s clearly much more than the splash of high-definition paint that constitutes most remakes. It doesn’t feel like an old game, wisely pulling in elements from later entries in the series and combining them into something that plays like a modern release. It might be the prettiest game I’ve ever played.

The game starts out with the questionable super hero Captain Qwark retelling the story of how the titular duo first met. The story is all familiar territory, though fleshed out a bit more here than in the original, and it manages to have some fun with the fact that it’s a remake thanks to some fourth-wall breaking jokes. But what really makes it work is just how amazing it all looks — the cut-scenes feel right out of a high-end animated movie (some of them literally are right out of the movie.)

WEAPONS & PLANETS

The weapons are pretty much the same weapons that we have grown to love from the franchise like the Mr. Zurkon, R.Y.N.O., Bouncer, Sheepinator, etc with fleshed out upgrading trees from the later future series games. We have many of the original planets from the original game with a couple extras included all being absurdly gorgeous with vibrant colors and detail. The environments range from Desert, Ice, Lava, & Ocean all truly showing the power of the PlayStation 4.

GAME PLAY

Game play is tight and well fleshed out again taking a lot from what Insomniac learned in the later games & applying it to the original giving a very well put together games leaving little to nothing for me to complain about. While I had recorded the first 15 minutes of the game to include in this review NBC Universal has been hitting lower you tubers with copyright claims and bringing down our videos as it has audio and video from the movie.

COLLECTIBLES

There are 2 types of collectibles in the new Ratchet & Clank the Gold Bolts that we are all familiar with as well as the new addition of Holo Cards. Gold Bolts are scattered throughout the game 2 or 3 per planet hidden in various locations. Holo Cards are a little more unique as you can find packs of them in locations as well as obtain them off of enemies. Completing a set will give a +5% chance on Raritanium or Holo Card Drops, This is also the way you earn the R.Y.N.O. a nice feature is when you get duplicate cards you can trade in 5 cards towards 1 card you don’t have (minus the R.Y.N.O. set)

VERDICT

Over all Ratchet & Clank has great humor, game play, etc for both kids and Adults as the game doesn’t take itself seriously its just pure FUN what games are supposed to be no hidden social messages or anything. Show Insomniac & PlayStation that we still love these games even if it’s a budget title at $40 dollars. It is in my opinion one of the most beautiful games on PS4 to date but will likely be 2nd place in a week when Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4 releases on May 10th.

MOVIE Vs GAME

As I’ve seen the movie now I thought I would add a section of my thoughts on the movie Vs the game. If you are thinking you don’t need to see the movie if you’ve played the game or vice versa get that outta your head now. The game & movie follow the same basic story but both have unique scenes complementing each other by adding more to the story. Overall the movie is good fun definitely go see it if you haven’t. I’m disappointed that theaters didn’t give it more show times.
