DOOM to Hell & Back – Review

The demon king of the first-person shooter returns. Though far from the first game in the genre, the 1993 original was a pioneering triumph, responsible for defining everything from weapon archetypes to the very concept of the competitive communities we enjoy today. No pressure then.

It’s been 12 years since DOOM 3, a game that flirted far too closely with survival horror. This Doom has no such concerns. It’s the embodiment of classic Doom – knee-deep in the dead, last-bullet-in-the-chamber, brutal carnage.

Combat
You are rewarded for aggression and map navigation. The pace of the combat is fast and the frame rate is smooth. Enemies teleport in and flank you, so standing still is a bad idea. You’ll need to charge into the fray and blast them, while remembering the 5 D’s of Doom: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and uhh… Dodge. The weapons, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, plasma rifle, rocket launcher, and BFG all have upgrades and alternate fire modes, so you can customize the feel of the game. Blast enemies, and if they are wounded, they’ll become stunned for a few seconds. While stunned, you can melee attack them and they burst like piñatas, dropping health and extra ammo. Sure this is a bit gimmicky, but it rewards the player for taking the fight to the enemies. There are many different types of enemies and just enough variation to keep the fights interesting.

Upgrades & Runes

The game has many different upgrade systems in the game via keys you find on dead “Elite” soldiers to upgrade your suit and guns to Argent Cells to upgrade health, Armor & Ammo. There is also Runes you can obtain by doing Rune Trials which require you to do X objective in X amount of time. There are roughly 12 earn-able runes that have various perks and you can have 3 equipped at a time.

Multiplayer

DOOM’s Multiplayer in my opinion is So So obviously this isnt a game that you would be buying specifically for the multiplayer even though they really tried to push it leading up to the games release.  it has 6 different modes Team Death Match, Soul Harvest ( very much like kill confirmed from CoD), Domination, Warpath, Freeze Tag, & Clan Arena. I haven’t put too much time into the all the MP modes except TDM, Soul Harvest and Warpath. All modes I’ve enjoyed but everything else about the MP is your basic idea of an MP Set/Custom load outs, Customize your characters armor skin & color, as well as Gun Skins.

Snap Map

Honestly put just enough time into this mode as i had to to get the trophies. it is IDs new custom map maker you can make arenas, set objectives etc.. i saw someone via twitter making a whole semi open world game with quest givers and such. Making maps and such has never really been my thing so I passed on messing with this for the most part.

Story

Story has never really been DOOM’s strong point & while it stays relatively the same on story strength in this installment if you sit and read all the collectibles, listen to dialogue, & pay attention to your surroundings this game is JAM PACKED with lore and story its just not spoon fed to you via dialogue. I read an article from our friends at Kotaku that goes down the rabbit fall & I recommend to any DOOM fan as a must read. The Wild Theory That Connects All DOOM games

Final Verdict
Doom is a fun throwback to the old series. The combat is exciting and intense. You’re often low on ammo and health, and you’re forced to charge enemies and glory kill them or frantically search for power ups. You’ll be frantically evading and firing back at the hordes of enemies that rush you. Exploring the levels for secrets is fun and you can find some great power ups.

Buy it if you love exciting combat and obviously a fan of the franchise.
