Thank You Guerrilla Cambridge – Love Alpha

Before I begin my story, thank you, Guerrilla!

16 years old… that’s how old I am. I began gaming when I was only 5 years old in 2005 with the PSP being my first console. Ever since then, I have been gaming EVERY day and I love it. My cousin always had a big selection of games, and one day I got a PS3 and he just gave me all of his PS1 games to play. One of those games was Medievil. I will never forget that day when I popped in MGS and didn’t like it so I switched to Medievil. I didn’t sleep until I beat the entire game and from there I fell in love with SCEE Cambridge. So I asked my cousin if he could get me any other game from that studio. So, one day he came over. He had a copy of Primal and I couldn’t be happier.

Flash forward to 2017. I love the absolute fuck out of Killzone: Mercenary and play RIGS at least once a week since launch. Everything has been going amazing in 2017. I got my Yakuza 0 review code so I’ve been loving that and it’s just been such a good time since the New Year started. That is, until this morning. It was maybe…. 7:30 am, 10 minutes away from starting my midterms when the news broke that Sony shut down Guerrilla Cambridge and I was just in shock. I don’t understand how this had happened….. it just seem too unreal to me. I first thought, “maybe it was sales” but it couldn’t have been that. Killzone: Mercenary had sold over a million copies on a handheld with only 14 million as an install base. So maybe I though RIGS was the issue, well, I was wrong. It shifted 120K physically alone, and that’s on a platform with less than 600K install base.

So I pondered what it was and throughout the day started Tweeting the team thanking them for everything they’ve done. I still can’t find a logical answer to shut down a studio of 80 passionate gamers. I thought the same thing when Microsoft closed Lionhead. That is one of their best-known developers and they just dropped them like it was nothing. That’s what Sony did to Cambridge. Ever since they renamed Cambridge under Guerrilla, people thought it was just an extra team, not a studio. It seemed like they were always in trouble ever since because people just thought the games came from one place. Sony turned around Bend Studio and Japan Studio, I wished they could do the same for Cambridge. It’s too hard to let such talent go.

All in all, I just wanna thank the entire team at Guerrilla Cambridge for everything you’ve done for me and for PlayStation Nation. You’ve been a wonderful studio for 19 years and I wish it could’ve continued on for many more. All these amazing game experiences will be why I will always love you guys. I just wish we had another Medievil before you guys were dropped. Best of luck to you all and may you game on! <3
